Innovation

RnA is the inventor of RnAssays® comprising assays developed at the Utrecht University and owns patents for the innovative covalent coupling of antigenic and receptor structures to solid surfaces, such as those of well-defined microspheres, sensor-surfaces or sensor-tips.

We  are specialized in the development and application of time- and cost-saving diagnostic assays for safety and quality control in the primary and secondary food production sectors with the focus on food of animal origin.

Food safety implies the control of the total production process from feed to fork. Each link in the chain of feed and food production is responsible for the safety of the final food product.

The use of faster, more reliable and relatively cheap tools for the control on microbiological and non-microbial contamination are not only important for producers, but for consumers as well.

RnAssays® comprise a series of easy-to-use kits to determine the presence of agents, such as Trichinella spp., Toxoplasma gondii, sulphonamides and Salmonella  spp. These kits should meet current and future legislation demanding (fresh) food products free from specific contaminants.

Therefore, our kits are made suitable for a modern routine diagnostic laboratory in terms of high-throughput, short hands-on times and improved sensitivity.

Test results Sal Plex™ and ELISA

Diagnostic sensitivity, specificity and cut-off value of the Sal Plex™ for Salmonella serogroup B on sera relative to results of specific bacterial culturing of lymph nodes of 1,040 Dutch slaughter pigs from various farms (field samples and strains). The corresponding data for a frequently applied commercially available ELISA-test kit are summarized as well.

Test results SalPlex versus ELISA

Positive results may be prone for confirmation by selective bacterial culturing. The power of the unique serogroup-fingerprinting of the Sal Plex™ is its ability to discriminate non-specific from specific signals, which is not possible in an ELISA assay. If a sample scores on all serogroups then this is a very strong indication of an occassionally occurring non-specifc antibody response (originating from a humoral response against a non- Salmonella Enterobacteriaceae infection). Consequently, the chance of confirmation actions on the basis of false-positive results will decrease and thus their associated costs.

The precision of the Sal Plex™ outperforms that of ELISA assays, of which the relative standard deviation is approximately 10%. A high relative standard deviation may give rise to false-positive results, in particular, if the final result is close to the decision limit of the assay. Vice versa, a smaller CV, such as for the Sal Plex™, may give less false positive results and thus will reduce the costs for re-analysis of the sample and that for confirmation analyses by  e.g . selective bacterial culture.
